The five elements and doshas
Ayurveda is based in the philosophical system samkhya the five elements that make up all the material manifestation of the universe .
They are ether, air, fire , water and land . All matter in the universe comes from these five elements, including the human body (which besides the matter, is also formed by buddhi - discernment, ahamkara - ego and manas - mind ). According to Ayurveda, when one of the five elements are in imbalance in the body the individual begins the process of disease.
According to this tradition, humans are influenced by the five elements through the dosha. The doshas are Vata governed by air and ether, Pitta , ruled by fire and water and Kapha governed by land and water. Everyone has all three doshas, \u200b\u200bbut in different proportions. At the time of our conception of our Constitution is set, ie, the doshas are present in greater quantity in the body. At birth, this ratio is balanced ( prakriti ), but with time and the wild life comes an imbalance in one or more of these doshas ( vikrti ), contributing to the emergence and development of diseases.
For the individual have healthy body is necessary to keep your tissues healthy and this is possible through food, which must be in accordance with the current state of the patient, ie according to their predominant dosha and imbalances it may have. The tissues that comprise the human body are formed from the five elements, which consume in the form of food. For Ayurveda, a person's health is measured by the strength of its Agni (fire digestive). A "good agni" is able to extract the nutrients of the diet needed to form webbing on the other hand, when agni is decreased or is irregular (lower digestive capacity) to nourish the tissues becomes poorer, thus compromising the health and integrity structural body. It is usual to hear a lot that "you are what you eat", but we can conclude with the foregoing, that the Indian medicine goes further: "You are what you can digest."
